Trend Watch: Health & Wellness in Convenience Stores

When it comes to healthy, nutritious food choices, what exactly are consumers looking for? According to the National Marketing Institute, consumers want foods that contain no artificial sweeteners, but still manage to taste delicious. It’s not all about the calorie count, either. This health-conscious group is also looking for foods that are high in fiber and protein, but low in sodium, fat and carbs. They tend to scan products for labels that indicate a product is free from GMOs or made with all natural ingredients. So, how do convenience stores fit in with this health and wellness trend?

Many people may think that consumers who shop at convenience stores are not concerned with the health content of products, but that’s not the case. In 2014, 76% of convenience store customers said consuming healthy, natural foods was important to them. Although these customers value health throughout the day, they are most concerned with having a nutritious breakfast, giving convenience stores the opportunity to expand their healthy breakfast options. Food distributors should focus on bringing packaged, all natural oatmeal, grab-n-go protein breakfast bars, and fresh fruits.

Health-conscious consumers are also open to drinking shakes or smoothies as meals, especially in the morning when they tend to be more rushed. Food distributors capitalize on this behavior by expanding single-serve beverage options by introducing packaged protein shakes, smoothies and meal replacements.

Another positive sign that the health and wellness trend will only serve to continue convenience stores’ growth? In a recent survey, 53% of consumers said they would make more frequent trips to c-stores if there were healthy options available. When pitching to convenience stores, food distributors and brand representatives should focus on their quick restock time, and their ability to deliver fresh, healthy foods on a regular basis.
