THE SHARK TANK EFFECT
Pitching a business idea is one thing every entrepreneur cannot escape. Entrepreneurship is not having the will and the interest in running a business – the entrepreneur must move with a clear set of goals and objectives. There must be a purpose to which the business was created. When an entrepreneur pitches his idea, it is easy to see if the major motive of the entrepreneur is to make money or to add value. Ironically, facts have shown that the best money is made when value is added to people. Thus, the ideal entrepreneur seeks to add value to the society. Getting the value adding ideas pitched is the reason for the TV program, Shark Tank Effect.
The Shark tank Effect is a TV show where people with business ideas come around to pitch their ideas in the hope of getting investors for it. Many ideas have gotten investments on the show but the value in the show is not merely in the investment money but in the learning experience. The experience gained by pitching an idea before a television audience of over 8 million is second to none. Either the idea brought a deal or not, the exposure is guaranteed.
The show is such that it requires anyone pitching the idea to know everything about the venture; from the business environment, the feasibility study, its practicality and the risk assessment. The sharks, who are the persons who would ask the questions, would ask questions that can shake a giant off his feet. A giant would need more than just the knowledge of the idea to pitch the idea.
It has been suggested that the person who would pitch his idea at the Shark Tank Effect must not focus much light and attention on what he stands to gain but on getting the investor returns on the investment. Ironically, if the idea is well pitched and it brings a deal, it would still bring an investment deal and thus the returns on the investment of the investor must be guaranteed.
It has also being said that pitching is like inviting another party to walk a path you are expected to have worked on. Thus, getting an investor to put money, connections and other resources to support an idea is not for trial and error.
It is advised that anyone who wants to pitch an idea on a TV show like the Shark Tank Effect which has millions of viewers should have tried pitching it elsewhere. This would lead to total scrutiny of the idea and less pressure. The scrutiny would help in anticipating the sharks while the low pressure would help build the confidence required.
Not getting a deal may open the gate to better ones as many investors watch the show from their convenience. They all won’t be on the show. An investor may be interested in an idea but the idea didn’t get a deal but the investor may have suggestions on how to fine-tune and repackage the idea.
