Inventory Management
Retailers rely on their inventory; some say that the success of a retail business can be detected by the level of inventory on such business. This tells that the inventory can determine greatly the extent to which a retailer can thrive in this vibrant world of retail. An inventory is therefore the set of goods stored or stocked for posterity. They are referred to as a storage of future goods, a place where retailers can go to when there is a shortage of products in the store or market. It is more or less a bank for goods, a safe house for future occurrences. The success of a retail business also rests heavily on the management of such future resources, how retailers can leverage on what they have in their storehouses.
It is obvious that just the inventory alone doesn’t guarantee success, but the effective storage of these items will help increase profit and stability in the business.
Inventory management helps to alleviate the regular mantra ‘out of stock’ of some companies. The evolution of retail has afforded consumers the luxury of choice, these days when a product is out of stock, the consumer has more than one option of stores to get the same product or even to change the store.
Inventory management hopes to avoid the loss of customers to the out of stock cries of failed retailers. Customers will prefer to shop at the other stores than for the out of stock song to keep ringing in their heads when they visit your store. This the essence of inventory management is to prevent any situation that allows the loss of customers. It is in the best interest of the retailer to have sufficient stock to offer the customers as once there is crisis one cannot predict when the suppliers can get the products down to the stores.
Now that we have established the importance of inventory management, there are some few peculiar terms used in this field that retailers must familiarize themselves with. One of such terminology is Stock Keeping unit. SKU as it is fondly called is the code used to identify and track products at the retail store. Every product in the store has a unique code which makes it easy for retailers to track them using SKU. Once the code is accessed on the main computer, the product can be identified quickly.
Another useful terminology in inventory management is Stock Out. This is a situation where the retailer fails to fulfil the customer’s requirements. As a result of lack of merchandise, the retailer will not be able to take the orders of the customer. Furthermore, prevention of loss of inventory can be achieved through some tips:
• Avoid multiple exits
• Check employee bags before leaving the store.
• Keep proper record of inventory that is take record of goods coming in and going out of the store.
• As an employee report or raise an alarm when something goes wrong in the inventory.
