California Grocers Association
The grocery industry provides sustainability to the economy of the country, literally and figuratively. Either in the creation of thousands of jobs or the provision of different food options, the grocery industry sustains individuals and connects the community – most notably, in California.
According to statistical analysis, the grocery industry provides about 820000 jobs in the state of California, $11 billion tax revenue, and $105 billion economic value. All of these aside from the numerous community development programs and activism from the industry. California Grocers Association was established to connect businesses in the industry to make a difference.
California Grocers Association was established in 1898 and is one of the oldest state trade associations in the United States. It has continually served as the voice of the state’s grocery community, totaling over 300 retailers and about 6000 stores and 150 supply companies – CGA can loudly boast of an extensive membership base. The association is recognized as the leading industry representative with governmental bodies, other state trade associations, and even the consumer end-users.
Organizational Structure
The association is led by a board of senior management team led by Ronald Fong, who also doubles as the President of CGA Educational Foundation. Other key members of the management team include Doug Scholz, Senior Vice President; Dave Heylen, Vice President Communications; and Kelly Ash, Vice President Government Relations and Chief Lobbyist.
All of these critical members have prior experience in non-profit associations, marketing and communications, and strategic advocacy efforts. The association is devoted to providing its members with a concise and viable advocacy program, relevant media relations representatives, reliable educational scholarship opportunities, and cutting-edge communications resources.
Advocacy Programs And Membership Benefits
Having in mind the strategic position held by the economy of the state of California in how the entire world eats, the association is committed to building relationships that keep the industry profitable and productive. One of the primary goals of CGA has said its communications department is to ‘sustain a policy environment that benefits both the grocers and consumers.’
The association runs state advocacy programs that allow it to sort through bills in several legislative sessions. Advocacy efforts of the association are focused on challenges related to guidelines on food production, safety measures, employment, and transportation of goods in the state.
Through legal representations, CGA keeps tabs on county board and city council agendas in the state that directly or sometimes indirectly affect the grocery industry. Furthermore, the association runs a nonpartisan action committee that is saddled with the responsibility of supporting political candidates whose interests are aligned with the grocery industry.
CGA offers its members several benefits. Ranging from updated industry-related policy briefs to access to scholarships and reimbursement programs through funds and foundations, the association has the best interests of its members at heart.
CGA offers its retailers, suppliers, and other member firms a platform to establish deeper connections in the industry through networking.
